2009 DTG Tolkien Seminar

Violence, Conflict and War in Tolkien

The 2009 DTG Seminar invites scholars from all walks of academia to explore violence, conflict and war in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien from these and other differing angles. Possible topics include content as well as formal and structural elements of Tolkien’s writings – from imagery via narrative structures to myth, their sources and analogues, issues of Otherness (including racial and gendered differences), questions of justice and ethics, concern with technology, etc.

Conference languages are English and German.

Mythcon 40

The 40th Annual Conference of the Mythopoeic Society; back in Southern California for the first time since 1997 and our debut appearance at the very appealing UCLA. We will occupy UCLA's DeNeve Plaza, which means great accessibility, amenities, and comfort.

GOHs are James A. Owen, author and artist, and Diana Pavlac Glyer, Inklings scholar and author. Daytime programming will include excellent scholarly and amusing papers and panels; evening events run to fun.

The annual presentation of the Mythopoeic Awards will take place at the banquet. Do come join us!

Tolkien at the University of Vermont 2009, an academic conference devoted to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, will be held at the UVM in Burlington, VT on Saturday, April 11th and Sunday, April 12th. The conference organizers seek 20-minute papers on any topic related to Tolkien or his texts, but the following topic will be given priority consideration: sex and/or gender in Middle-earth or related to Tolkien’s life or works.
